Roles To Consider In A Dental Career

If you are considering a career in a dental practice, then there a number of roles which you could conisder that go beyond the well known roles of the dentist. All the roles available will see you in a position that is well respected, client facing, flexible and well paid.

The Dentist Role

Obviously this is the best known dental role. A dentist\’s duty is to work with their patients in the prevention and treatment of oral disease, amending irregulaties of the teeth and gums and treating dentistry related injuries.

Dental Nurse

A dental nurse\’s role is one where they work closely with the dentist in the preparation of dental materials and the treatment of the patient. They will prepare the materials and instruments at the request of the dentist whilst also ensuring the comfort of the patient before, during and after treatment.

Depending on the practice, the dental nurse will also carry out admin work and provide assistance in reception.

Dental Hygienist

A hygienist\’s tasks will involve the treatment and education of patients to prevent future problems from occurring. When you visit a hygienist they will scale and polish your teeth whilst advising on how the patient should best look after their teeth to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Orthodontist

An orthodontist will produce bespoke braces for a patient in order to straighten and move teeth that have become irregular. The orthodontist will focus on altering a person\’s bite to regulate the pressure applied to their teeth. In doing so they not only improve the function or person\’s mouth, but also the aesthetics.

The Dental Technician

The role of the dental technician is to make the bespoke patient treatments as perscribed by the dentist who examined them. They will use materials such as plastic, porcelain and gold in order to build crowns, braces, bridges and dentures.
