There are earth movers, equipment movers, even equipment to lift beams and trusses. each and every one of these are cricital to the job and all of them are going to require operators. Are you the next one to fill one of the widely envied heavy equipment operator jobs?

As you may notice , there are many of opportunities if you are willing to learn. Most construction companies will require that you have some sort of certification. You can either have it when you come onto the job (which will make you significantly more hirable), or you can learn it on the job and ultimately earn a larger salary for being one of the few heavy equipment operators at the construction site.

Certification & Education

There are some construction companies that will not require certification, but note that you operate the equipment at your own risk, and the risk of the company. If an accident were to happen, you would likely lose your job and the company would go under. For this reason, it would be best to decline operating any equipment until you obtain your certification.

As far as formal education goes, you will most likely need a high school diploma if anything. If you want to operate more complicated equipment then you will definitely need some more training. You might even want to take a few electronics related classes at a community college.

Earnings & Salary

The salary on these jobs are fairly nice. As a construction worker you would most likely earn about $8-13/h, but if you are a heavy equipment operator, then you could make as much as $20-25/h, and that’s not exactly something to scoff at. If you are an independent contractor, you could be making even more money. Crane operators can make several hundred dollars per hour, though these wages are normally earned by independent contractors who are owner/operators. The reason for these wages is simply that it takes that much to operate the crane.

Advancement

Contrary to conventional belief, there are lots of opportunities for advancement in this field. If you are great at what you do, you might just find yourself teaching other people to operate the equipment. There is a need for heavy equipment operators in this business, and if you can train more, then you will find yourself in a great position. In fact, you could make more cash than you ever believed possible , even if it’s not quite as much as an independent crane operator.

Obviously the outlook for this job is good, and will only get better as the years go by. Are you ready to become part of a workforce that will continue to grow and prosper? If so, then start looking at the different construction companies near you. With any luck, you will find a great company to work for that will teach you the art of heavy equipment operation.
