Halo 3
Halo 3 is a popular video game for the Xbox 360 video game system that was released in 2007 all around the world. It was the third of a popular trilogy of games called the Halo series, which began in 2001 with Halo: Combat Evolved. The original game was considered the Xbox 360s killer app, the game that made the system popular.
How popular was Halo 3? Over 4.2 million units of Halo 3 were in retail outlets the day before the official release, and in total it grossed $300 million in sales in the first week. Over 1 million people played Halo 3 on Xbox live in just the first 24 hours. As of January of 2008 Halo 3 sold 8.1 million copies, and was the best-selling video game in the United States in 2007.
The entire Halo series, including Halo 3, put console first-person shooter gaming on the map. Prior to the Halo series first-person shooter games were played on the computer and anything found on a console was just an afterthought. Halo on Xbox and Xbox 360 created its own huge following, including communities online to play the game in leagues and competitions, as well as in clans and teams. For the first time the console was a serious PC computer competitor when it came to running, pointing, and shooting – and all the games including Halo 3 have done it well.
Halo 3 has a story that focuses on an interstellar war taking place in the 26th century – mankind takes on a conglomeration of alien races called the Covenant. The player takes on the persona of the Master Chief, a super soldier enhanced with cybernetics and helped by a group of marines and an alien race known as the Elites. This version of the game included a map editor which allow players to modify multiplayer levels. This has never before been seen in the series, and was very popular.
Currently the maker of the Halo series and Halo 3 is working on a prequel Called Halo 3: ODST, which stands for orbital drop shock trooper. This will be the first game in the Halo series in which the player does not play as Master Chief. It’s a little bit like the upcoming Terminator 4 movie, which for the first time will not include Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a Terminator.
