Creative Conversation Starter Questions

by Alan Bentley

When you want to break the ice, just think about some good conversation starter questions. These questions can be used to create a comfortable social environment, as nobody likes an awkward silent moment!

Conversation starter questions are great to have at the ready for first dates. Some good talking points are: How was your day? Where did you grow up? What do you do? What do you like to do when youre not working? Do you have any pets? Whos your favorite performer? Do you like to travel? Whats your ideal vacation spot?

Conversation starter questions prepare you for any encounter and give you the confidence to meet people. Open ended questions about a topic that doesnt pry into personal lives or conflict with personal beliefs are best.

Think about something that you have in common, when you are in a situation where you need to make conversation with a stranger. If you are at a party, for example, talk about the party, location, its hosts etc. and you will put others at ease.

There are a number of neutral questions that you can use when you want to get to know another person better. For example — what do you do in your free time? If you could change anything in your life, what would it be? Ask them about their hobbies, and be engaged by following up with a question like — what do you enjoy about it?

For some people, the thought of interacting with another terrifies them. These people tend to be shy or introvert and get nervous as they are afraid they will say the wrong thing at the wrong time, especially on a date. If you treat a date like a regular encounter, things will be much less stressful. Your thoughts and words will flow, especially if you talk about safe things like books, music, travel, leisure and movies.

As you are learning about a person, in the discovery phase, some good conversation starter questions might include — tell me about your family? What were your best and worst jobs? Who is your best friend? What would you consider some life-changing moments? Tell me about your first kiss? What’s your favorite food? What’s the dumbest thing you’ve done? What inspires you? As things progress and you get more involved, you might want to ask far more serious questions like – do you want children? Do you save money? How many times have you been in love? Have you ever been arrested or done drugs? What’s the weirdest thing about you? What’s your idea of a romantic date?

Show interest in other people, and play to their strengths when you are composing conversation starter questions. You might like a shirt which they are wearing, so you could ask a question about this. For example, we did they get it? This will lead into a conversation about the store, a shopping experience, the shopping mall, etc. You can keep the conversation going by asking more open-ended questions and this would lead further into other topics.
